Felucca Trip - 3/1/12 - Day 2

I got up at around  7.30 - not able to sleep any more and enjoyed the quiet of the morning.  The others were up by around 8.30 and Aly got down to preparing breakfast.  This consisted of omelet, panne and cheese followed by  fruit (bananas).  We enjoyed this on the boat on the banks of the Nile and watched the kingfishers diving (more time spent unsuccessfully trying to get a photo).  After going out for  last ablutions, it was time to go.

We helped Aly and Mustafa take own the covers and before long, the felucca was out on the Nile making the most of the morning winds.  The day was one of total relaxation.  We lay on the felucca watching the birds, Nile boats, rowing boats and the odd felucca.  Aly was a mine of information and shared many Nubian words and information about his background.  Every couple of hours he offered us tea and sometimes biscuits.

We had lunch at around 2pm.  It was a big lunch of panees, tomato salad, tuna and faluffels and cheese.  The afternoon was lazy and enjoyable.  At one stage, Aly stopped at a spot with a small beach where Guy and all jumped stones.  I think that the plan had been to sun bathe and swim, but it was too cold for that.  By around 4.30pm we started looking for the stopping place for the night.    We were sad in the knowledge that tomorrow we would be crossing the river to catch a taxi to Luxor.

We  passed an island on the way covered with amazing bird life including a pelican.  Aly found a very pleasant and sheltered spot on  an island which had a small sheltered beach and also lots of bird life.  We relaxed (again!) while Aly made us supper.

This time we had chicken (deep fried)  and rice.  That night Aly and Mustafa joined us in the meal.  When we had finished, we helped Mustafa make a fire on the beach and we all sat around the fire while Aly and Mustafa sang Nubian music (with a few english/Nubian songs as we had heard on New Years Eve).  We shared the remainder of our Egyptian Port with Mustafa and the kids shared their Fanta with Aly.  It was a magic evening and a great send off to a wonderful trip.  We returned to the boad at around 10pm and had a much more comfortable (and warmer) nights sleep.
